There are many common applications– but one of the most popular use for 316 SS stud bolts is in piping flanges.
316 is the second most common fastener used in the piping and heavy construction industry. It differs from the more common 304 stainless by using molybdenum, making it a good choice for applications involving chlorides.
316 SS is a material, it is not a specification. Technical Threads can manufacture studs in this material to several common specifications including ASTM A193 Grade B8M, ASTM F593G CW 1, ASTM A320 Grade B8M and ASTM F593G CW1. A subset of 316 stainless is 316/L. The “L†is a low carbon variation that was intended to combat carbide precipitation that sometimes results from welding. However, certain chemicals and industrial environment standardize on 316L as a requirement for many materials, including fasteners.
